Concession Definition

A concession is something yielded to an opponent during an argument, such as a point or a fact. Concessions often occur during formal arguments and counterarguments, such as in debates or academic writing. A writer or debater may agree with one aspect of his or her opponent’s ideas and yet disagree with the rest. The writer will allow this one aspect to be true, while proving how the rest is wrong. Conceding certain points can have certain tactical benefits, such as showing how some aspects of the opponent’s arguments are fallacious.

The word concession comes from the Latin word concessionem, which has the same definition of concession, i.e., “allowing or conceding.”

Concession

The Concession is a rhetorical stylistic tool, which is mainly used in speeches. Anyone using a Concession takes up the opponent’s argument and also acknowledges that it is correct. However, it makes it ineffective in the same train, by giving an argument which is stronger and thus weakened (→ argument types).

A concession is an act of yielding. In terms of your paper that means agreeing with a parent objection, but generally providing some sort of compensation to partially make up for the problem.
Example: Dad, you are right that building a tree house would take a lot of time, but I will help with the project to make it move faster. My friends Paul and Frank have also volunteered to help us build.

The term is derived from the Latin and can be translated with an admission. As a result, the translation already refers to what we are dealing with fundamentally: an argumentary acknowledgment that the opponent’s argument is correct [with the simultaneous remark that one’s own strength is stronger and the other is ineffective].
Let’s look at an example
The strikers are right when they point to the bad conditions.
Nevertheless, this should not lead to redundancies, since they comply with the standard.
In the example above, the observer has led to the objection that the strikers are perfectly correct, in order to defuse him as a result. In this case, it is pointed out that the conditions correspond to the standard, that is to say, are largely valid in the industry.

Their objection that the economy is on the ground is correct.
But that’s what their faction has to answer

In this case, as well, the interlocutor is first compelled to take up the objection that the economic situation is bad. In the same train, the whole thing is weakened when it is pointed out that the other side is responsible for the decline.
Yes. GĂĽnther has behaved immorally, but he can not be legally punished for it.

The above example agrees with the other in that it is taken up that GĂĽnther has certainly behaved immorally. However, the objection is equally mitigated by pointing out that this is legally unimportant: but a clear concession.
Note: All of the examples listed above have a common denominator: they attack the objection to the other side, in order to refute or at least defuse it.

Effect and function of Concession
Concession writing acknowledges that there are many different views to a story. This type of writing allows for different opinions that can or could be made toward an issue. It also shows that all points, positive as well as negative, have been considered before an argument is put forward. Presenting the other side and then arguing against it with valid points can make it a very strong piece of writing. Acknowledging the other side demonstrates respect for the other opinion. The concession writing technique is also known used as a method of persuasion and reasoning.
It works best to demonstrate that you have done your research and you have considered your arguments fully before entering into a discussion. An example of this is showing your support with a picture of your dog walking through the yard.

Concession writing makes the readers feel that they would do the same on a day-by-day basis. By allowing the reader to choose an opinion without having to listen to it fully one can be able to explain why one is a good and right way to act. Many other people also benefit by these types of articles. The article will then be easier for a reader to get through when they can simply look at it and get the feel of it.
Concession and Rebuttal
“Concession and Rebuttal” sound pretty fancy, but it refers to two things:
To concede in an argument means to acknowledge another person’s thoughts about something.
I understand that you feel students should…

A rebuttal is a counterargument or a reply that you have for that person’s beliefs.
However, I believe that if you just trust kids more you would realize that…

A Concession is when you consider the opposing viewpoint, “conceding” something important. A reader of your essay is more likely to listen to your ideas if you show you can see his/her point of view before you counter that argument with your own. The Rebuttal is when your own argument proves the ideas of the reader to be false, or shows that your argument is stronger than theirs.
Here are some great transitions that you might use to help write effective Concession/Rebuttal arguments. Note that these transitions come in a series and should be used throughout the few sentences you write to build your full concession/rebuttal argument.

It is true that… however … therefore
Certainly… but … in short…
Admittedly … on the other hand … so …
Of course … nevertheless … as a result …
Obviously … on the contrary … finally …
Sure … however … in addition
Overview: Effect, Function and Meaning of Concession
The concession is the supposed capitulation before the opponent’s argument because it is committed to it. However, this only serves the appearance, since it is weakened or at least defused in the next turn.

The Concession can have an ironic undertone. Namely, when there is a pause between the objected objection and the more powerful argument, the apparent effect of surrender becomes clearer.
Note: Another expression for the style figure is the Greek word “paromology”, which means the same figure. The Concession is also related to the Permission. In this respect, it is acknowledged to the addressee that he enjoys the freedom of decision-making and freedom of action, assuming that this will ultimately take the speaker’s opinion.
